Rainbow Community Care hosted a touching dedication ceremony on Monday, October 6, to honor the life and contributions of Kristina Heimsch, a cherished nurse practitioner who passed away in April 2025 at the age of 37. Held in collaboration with Kristina’s family, the event established a peaceful and lasting tribute to her presence within the Rainbow family.

A Fire Maple tree, which was generously gifted by McKay Nursery of Waterloo, now stands on the front lawn of the Rainbow Hospice Care Inpatient Center. Kristina’s family also donated a memorial bench in her memory. The beautiful bench has been thoughtfully placed at the top of a nearby hill, providing patients, families, and staff with a spot to sit and reflect while looking out over the dedicated Fire Maple, symbolizing Kristina’s enduring connection to Rainbow and the community. A commemorative plaque, detailing Kristina's name and nursing credentials, serves as an anchor for the memorial and carries the deeply moving message: "Her hands healed. Her voice taught. Her soul inspired. Her legacy lives on in every life she touched."

“Kristina was a beacon of compassion and a tireless advocate for her patients, touching countless lives with her unwavering dedication and kindness,” said Carol Brown, CEO and President of Rainbow Community Care. “Her colleagues remember her not only for her exceptional clinical skills but for her infectious laughter and unique ability to bring light and hope into even the most challenging situations. Her spirit will remain a guiding force for all the healthcare professionals who knew her.”

The ceremony included a unique opportunity for staff and Kristina’s family to participate in the dedication. Attendees were given dissolving paper and supplies to write a meaningful word, message, or memory about Kristina. The water used to dissolve these notes was then poured at the base of Kristina’s tree to nourish it and signify the collective release of their memories and their gratitude for the impact she had on the organization.

“The event offered a meaningful sense of closure to a heartbreaking and sudden loss. The tree’s fiery colors mirror Kristina’s vibrant spirit, fierce dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence,” said Shauna Lambrecht, Rainbow Nurse Practitioner and Director of Provider Services. “The tree ensures Kristina’s legacy will live on in a space filled with healing and reflection, while the bench invites moments of quiet remembrance and connection.”
