How Can I Pay for Respite Care?

There are several options available to manage the cost of respite care:

  • Medicare: The Medicare Hospice Benefit provides 100% coverage for inpatient respite care in a Medicare-approved facility (like the Rainbow Hospice Care Inpatient Facility or a contracted hospital or nursing home). Your care team will arrange this for you. You can stay up to 5 days each time you get respite care. You can get respite care more than once, but only on an occasional basis.
  • Medicaid: Provides assistance based on eligibility criteria, which vary by state.
  • Private Insurance: Some private insurance plans may cover hospice respite care. Check your policy or contact your insurance provider for details.
  • Veterans Benefits: Veterans and their families may be eligible for benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Contact a VA representative for more information.
