Everything You Need to Know About the Rainbow Hospice Care Inpatient Center

Most people hope to spend their final days in the comfort of home, surrounded by familiar spaces and loved ones. And for many families served by Rainbow, home hospice care is exactly what they need.

However, there are times when symptoms become too complicated or medically demanding to manage safely at home. When that happens, the Rainbow Hospice Care Inpatient Center offers a higher level of care, in a setting intended to feel peaceful, supportive, and deeply personal.

Opened in 2011, this state-of-the-art facility in Johnson Creek provides short-term inpatient hospice care, respite stays, and around-the-clock nursing support in a calm and homelike environment.

When Is Inpatient Hospice Care Needed?

Inpatient hospice is not the default, it is a specialized level of care used when a patient needs more intensive medical support than can realistically be provided at home.

This may include situations such as:

  • Severe or uncontrolled pain
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Agitation or restlessness
  • Seizures or other distressing symptoms

For many patients, inpatient care is short-term. Once symptoms are stabilized, patients are often able to return home with hospice support.

If returning home is not possible, Rainbow’s team can help guide families through the next appropriate steps.

A Hospice Facility With a Homelike Feel

The Rainbow Hospice Care Inpatient Center is a freestanding facility specifically intended for end-of-life care. Families often find comfort in knowing that the space is:

  • Built to hospital-level safety standards
  • Designed to feel warm and peaceful rather than clinical
  • Created as a community-supported resource, funded through donations

The center includes eight private patient suites, family gathering spaces, outdoor views, and quiet areas for reflection.

24/7 Skilled Nursing and Hospice Support

One of the most important things families want to know is: will someone be there when we need help? At our inpatient center, the answer is yes.

The facility is staffed around the clock by:

  • Registered Nurses (RNs)
  • Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs)

Nursing care is available day and night with access to our full hospice interdisciplinary team, including:

  • Physicians and nurse practitioners
  • Social workers
  • Chaplains
  • Bereavement counselors
  • Dietitians
  • Trained hospice volunteers

In addition to medical, the care we provide is also emotional, spiritual, and family-centered.

How Admission Works

Admission to the inpatient center is coordinated through the hospice care team physician, and, if able, the patient’s attending physician. A nursing assessment is required to confirm that inpatient care is the most appropriate level of support.

If the patient is already receiving hospice care at home, Rainbow’s clinical team will manage the transition smoothly and respectfully.

Who Pays for Inpatient Hospice Care?

Families are often relieved to learn that inpatient hospice stays are typically covered in the same way home hospice is. Coverage may include:

  • Medicare
  • Medicaid (if eligibility criteria are met)
  • Private insurance (varies by plan)

Rainbow’s staff works directly with families to explain payment options and coverage details based on individual circumstances.

Patient Suites for Comfort and Privacy

The inpatient center includes eight private patient suites, each of which are designed to feel calm, comfortable, and adaptable.

Standard features include:

  • Adjustable hospital-style beds
  • Recliners and sleeper sofas for family
  • Call lights for immediate assistance
  • Private bathrooms with barrier-free showers
  • Space for personal items and familiar touches
  • Patio access and outdoor views

Families are encouraged to bring comforting items, clothing, music, or small personal belongings to help the room feel more like home.

Family-Friendly Support: Visitors, Children, and Pets Welcome

Rainbow’s inpatient center recognizes that end-of-life care involves the whole family. Visitors are welcome any time, day or night, 365 days a year.

Children are welcome as well, with a play area available in the family room. For safety, children under 12 should be supervised. Well-behaved pets may also visit, with staff approval.

Spaces for Rest, Reflection, and Connection

The facility includes many areas designed not just for patients, but for families who are spending long hours nearby. These include:

  • A family room with seating, fireplace, and TV
  • A screened porch for fresh air during warmer months
  • Quiet nooks at the end of hallways
  • An interfaith chapel open to all guests
  • Outdoor gardens, walking paths, and natural views

These spaces help families rest, breathe, and find moments of peace during an emotionally difficult time.

Meals, Dining, and 24-Hour Refreshments

Rainbow’s inpatient center includes a commercial kitchen led by an onsite chef. Patients receive meals three times per day, with snacks and beverages available 24/7.

Family members can also purchase lunch meals during the week, and complimentary beverages such as coffee, tea, soda, and water are always available. This level of hospitality can make long visits much more manageable for loved ones.

Overnight Accommodations and Practical Support

Overnight stays are easily arranged, and each patient suite includes limited sleeping accommodations for close family. The center also supports families with practical needs such as:

  • Nearby hotel recommendations
  • Laundry access for patient clothing
  • Delivery of mail, flowers, and messages directly to the room
